Bonk in The World is Open had me reflect on how the world is changing with the use of the web. Today as I started my travel, I am more aware of all the technology that is in use. Compared to five years ago, I noticed more smartphones in peoples hands. I saw less books but more on Blackberries reading emails and a couple reading off kindles. Ohhh how learning occurs whether its travel for business or pleasure.
I heard a great story on NPR about how poets are not happy about how the kindle changes the lines of their poems. The structure of a poem is very dependent on the physical line as a unit of thought... and even as a visual marker. I thought this was an interesting barrier to using technology and literature.
ReplyDeleteCarol, I hadn't thought about that aspect of reading poetry via technology. While I do think that some technological advances may get more people reading, the people in charge of these advances need to be mindful of the creative license take by the authors, or in this case poets, and stay true to the material. I still don't think that I will go from a book to a Kindle, but I rarely leave the house without my Blackberry, and I HATE making phone calls.
